About BonusX
Founded in Italy in 2020, BonusX is the AI co-pilot that helps citizens access government and financial benefits with ease. Through a smart and intuitive experience, BonusX guides users in discovering and obtaining the benefits they’re entitled to.
As of October 2025, more than 700,000 people in Italy use BonusX to simplify bureaucracy and make public services truly accessible.
The Challenge
As its user base increased, BonusX faced rising cloud costs and growing complexity in managing its AWS environment. With workloads expanding, it became increasingly difficult to track usage and ensure resources were being consumed efficiently.
They set out to reduce costs by optimizing infrastructure, gaining clearer visibility into spending patterns, and eliminating unnecessary expenses. All while still maintaining the performance and scalability the business required.
The Solution
BonusX deployed Automat-it’s FinOps expertise to identify cost optimization opportunities within its infrastructure.
This involved analysis to recognize opportunities where cost savings could be made by making adjustments and following AWS best practices.
Recommendations made to BonusX included focusing on:
RDS optimization:
Right-sizing the RDS Storage Type to a more cost-effective or performance-aligned storage option
- Optimizing RDS Provisioned IOPS
- Terminating an idle RDS instance based on connection count findings
- Applying Reserved Instances commitment discounts
Terminating unnecessary spend identified using Automat-it tooling:
- Terminating a discovered idle NAT Gateway to optimize resource usage and eliminate unnecessary cost
- Releasing unattached IP addresses
- Terminating an idle RDS instance based on connection count findings
Modernizations:
- Upgrading EC2 instances to the latest generation to achieve best price and performance
- Changing the EBS type to a newer type at a 20% lower price
These recommendations were shared with BonusX in a Cost Optimization Report.
The Results
After receiving the FinOps Cost Optimization Report from Automat-it, working hand-in-hand with the FinOps team, and leveraging Automat-it’s DevOps experts, BonusX implemented every recommendation.
